Wind turbine manufacturer Nordex has been chosen for the delivery and turnkey installation of a 100MW wind farm in South Africa.

Wind power producer Dorper Wind Farm (RF) Pty Ltd, whose sponsors are South African-based wind project developer Rainmaker Energy and its Japanese partner Sumitomo Corporation, confirmed Nordex would work on the site north-west of Queenstown in the Eastern Cape.

Nordex will start construction immediately, with the installation of 40 N100/2500 turbines from late 2013. The order also includes a service contract for an initial period of 10 years.

Dorper entered into a 20-year power purchase agreement with Eskom Holdings SOC Limited, a state-owned utility company, on Monday. On the same day it signed a contract with the South African Department of Energy, under which the DOE guarantees the payment obligations of Eskom under the PPA.

The Dorper wind farm is one of the first renewable energy projects the Department of Energy selected in December 2011. Further tendering processes are to be held in 2013.

Lars Bondo Krogsgaard, a member of Nordex’s management board, said: “I am convinced our South African company will make a key contribution to modernising the region’s power station base.”
